Taking your car out for a long drive with your friends sounds like a blissful escape plan to get away from the daily grind. You may even want to take this a step further and drive out of town for a mini vacation.
These plans, however, are not without worries of their own.
Whether you are taking your car out to drive around the country to explore breathtaking sights, going on a long drive with your friends, or even if you are just going out to run some errands – there are certain things to check to ensure that your car is covered.
This is where we come in – Perla Insurance, being one of the best car insurance companies in the Philippines, wants to keep our customers well informed when it comes to their car safety.
Do you know which information you need to take note of when it comes to your car insurance plan? If not, then you have come to the right place.
Here, we will discuss the essential things to check to make sure your car is covered for worry-free driving! Additionally, we will also discuss other vital points to guarantee your peace of mind every time you take your car out for a drive.
3 Essential Things to Check:
1. The details of the Certificate of Registration (CR) should be in the Insurance Policy.
First significant thing to make sure of is that all the details on the Certificate of Registration (CR) are what is also written on the insurance policy.
Double check to make sure that information like the name, make, model, chassis number, plate number, motor number and MV file number are also correctly specified on your Insurance Policy.
It is only when all these details match for both documents, that you are sure your particular car is covered.
Remember each car has a unique chassis and motor number. If there are any errors or discrepancies between the two documents, now is the perfect time to fix them. This is to avoid any problems that may arise in case you need to file for a claim later on.
2. Check that the risk being covered and the amount of coverage is stated in the Insurance Policy.
It is safe to say – reading the insurance policy is absolutely vital when it comes to knowing imperative information about your car insurance plan. It contains the risk being covered based on the coverage you indicated when you had the car insured, as well as the specific amounts for each type of coverage.
Carefully check if all the details indicated are what you originally paid for. Verify exactly what you purchased and know in which circumstances they are applicable to.
Take note that each coverage is different, and varies greatly. For example a coverage of Loss and Damage and Acts of Nature only cover your own vehicle. While TPL insurance and Excess Bodily Injury, just cover the other person who may be involved in the accident.
There is a specific type of risk covered for type of coverage. Therefore, you should always check the risk being covered, and the amount of coverage stated in the policy. So in the unlikely time of an accident, you’ll know exactly what’s included and taken care of by your insurance provider.
3. The premium of the Insurance Policy is FULLY PAID.
This is one of the most important – if not the most important thing you have to check! You should be aware that if your insurance policy is only partially paid, in the event of an unforeseen accident, you will not be covered.
In short, you will not have access to everything included in your car insurance plan. In fact to put in bluntly, it will be as if you did not even purchase any car insurance for yourself in the first place.
If you want to be fully covered on the terms of your car insurance plan, then make sure to fully pay the premium of your insurance policy.
Any outstanding dues and payments left unsettled will render your insurance policy both null and void.
Other Things To Consider:
In addition to those related to your car insurance policy, the following are also equally important:
1. Have a valid Driver’s License and make sure you are authorized to use the motorcycle, car, or truck that you will be driving.
Not having a valid license or authorization to drive your vehicle can land you in serious legal trouble and can also keep you from receiving aid if you are in need of help during times of crisis.
You should also make sure you are authorized to use the vehicle you are driving. There are three different types of license in the Philippines: student driver permit, non-professional license and professional license.
Student driver permit allows one to drive only if he is accompanied by a professional or non-professional driver. Non-professional license allows one to drive a vehicle only for personal or private uses. A professional license on the other hand allows one to drive vehicles for a paid purpose and is used by commercial vehicles.
Furthermore, under the country’s restriction system, there are more specific codes to take note of. For example, is your authorization only for motorcycle? Or is it for for vehicles up to 4,500 kg? Or is your authorization for vehicles of automatic clutch up to 4,500 kg in gross vehicle weight?
Confirm that you are authorized to drive the vehicle, based on the restrictions indicated in your current driver’s license.
2. Don’t drink and drive.
Do we even need to explain why?
Drunk driving is illegal in most areas, and it can cause both damage and loss to the lives and property of yourself, your loved ones, and the general public.
The safety and well-being of yourself, your passengers, and the passers-by on the road is the responsibility of the driver, and alcohol consumption can lead to severe risks and loss of control.
3. Get a Comprehensive Car Insurance Policy with all 6 coverage! Make sure it is RENEWED and not expired.
Perla Insurance offers 6 different types of Comprehensive Car Insurance coverage for your vehicle needs, namely: Compulsory Third Party Liability, Loss and Damage, Acts of Nature, Third Party Property Damage, Excess Bodily Injury and Auto Personal Accident. We suggest that your insurance policy has all 6 coverage.
Why? Well, let’s say your insurance plans do not have full coverage. What are the chances that you get into an accident that is not under the coverage you purchased?
For example if you availed of only Loss and Damage, which covers your car for theft or damage. If your car is damaged by earthquake, flood or typhoon, you will not be covered, since those risk fall under the Acts of Nature coverage.
Another very important thing to make sure of is that your insurance policy has not expired.
This is because if it is not annually renewed, then the insurance policy is no longer valid. Thus, you will not have any type of protection in case of any unforeseen accident.
4. Drive Carefully and Don’t Use Your Cell Phone While Driving.
When you use your cell phone while driving, you cannot focus on the road and give it the attention it requires. Driving requires an unbroken attention span that you cannot do while also using your phone.
You may miss the signal, fail to notice someone is crossing the road or be unable to stop the car in time, all because you were busy texting- with your eyes glued to the screen.
In terms of safe driving, it is crucial that you follow the traffic rules and drive under the speed limit.
You should always drive very carefully. Remember driving in an unsafe manner risks lives- and this is not even just your own life, but also the lives of people around you. Whether it is in a residential or a highway, or commercial area – you should follow the same level of care.
However, it is always good to remain even more vigilant if you are in a residential area or school zone where there may be children crossing the roads.
