Welcome to the topic “How to Calculate Fuel Consumption?”.
If you go at some foreign sites and sources, you’ll see phrases and acronyms like averages, kilometers per liter (km/L), and even miles per gallon (mpg) when we talk about fuel efficiency. Some individuals believe that fuel efficiency is the most important factor to consider when purchasing a car, and some will even justify terrible fuel economy for the sake of performance and vehicle dynamics. We suppose it’s a case of to each their own.
We’ll look at how fuel consumption numbers are calculated in this post, as well as some words and basic formulae for calculating a more realistic fuel consumption rating for your car based on your driving style. There is some arithmetic involved here, so proceed with caution.
Doing Manually
Cars now feature onboard computers that perform most of the calculations for you and show pertinent and on-demand data. There is also a manual method of calculating your real fuel use, which is rather straightforward. Follow these instructions the next time you fill up your tank at the gas station:
- Fill your tank to the top.
- The trip counter is reset to zero.
- Make a note of how many kilometers you’ve driven the next time you fill-up.
- Fill the tank up again, and keep track of how many liters you put in.
- Divide the number of kilometers driven from the number of liters of gasoline added (kilometers per liter)
Liters per 100KM
You’ll note that certain automobiles measure your fuel consumption in liters per 100 kilometers or l/100km. Divide 100 by the no. of liters next to the “l” to get kilometers per liter. So, if my reading is 6 liters per 100 kilometers, 100 divided by 6 becomes 16.6 kilometers per liter (km/L). Isn’t it simple?
Converting MPG to km/L (and vice versa)
If you come across a vehicle with a miles per gallon (mpg) value and want to convert it to kilometers per liter (km/L), multiply it by 0.4251.
10.63 kilometers per liter is equivalent to 25 miles per gallon multiplied by 0.4251.
To convert km/L to mpg, multiply the value of the kilometer per liter by 2.353.
23.53 miles per gallon is equivalent to 10 kilometers per liter multiplied by 2.353.
Guidelines for General Use
Just keep in mind that the fuel consumption figures published by manufacturers are only for comparison reasons, and they are usually obtained in controlled testing facilities and under ideal conditions. Because your driving style has a big impact on these numbers, the actual fuel consumption varies a lot from one driver to the next and the conditions in which the car was driven.
Because of urban traffic’s stop-and-go (frequent takeoffs) nature, we tend to keep accelerating at high rpm. A car that travels through heavy traffic will use more fuel than one that travels at regular, normal speeds. On the highway, fewer stops and maintaining a consistent speed can assist reduce fuel use as we go further.
Many cars also feature a start-stop system and hybrid technologies to help reduce fuel loss in a range of driving circumstances. Transmissions with wider bands and more gears are also becoming more common, allowing us to keep our vehicles in the most efficient and optimal rev range. These things contribute to lower fuel usage and higher gas savings for those extra kilometers.
